a story to share.

I did vital signs for a patient this morning. He was a foreigner, working here in Malaysia. I'm not quite sure where he is from, maybe from Bangladesh as he talks and looks like one..I think he has been living here for awhile, he can already speak Malay fluently.

So when I was preparing the Blood pressure set, I chatted with him. Then he said he was glad that we ( the student nurses ) were working there.  He praised us for how we work and  how we treat every patients.  ‘ semua manyak baik ‘ said him. I smiled and he continued his words… ‘ tala macam itu malam2 punya missy ( night shift staff nurses)’. I asked why and he said that the staff nurses were so unfriendly and unapproachable. They do not want to attend to the patients and they also treat and talk to them rudely.

‘Itu malam punya missy, manyak garang wo. Marah2 itu macam. Kalau panggil pun marah wo. Itu satu malam aa, itu missy singgah sini, saya minta tolong ambil itu tembakai  juga ( tembikai, HAHA.). Itu tembakai atas meja, tapi dia tala bagi juga. Dia bilang itu bukan kerja dia orang. Haa. ‘ shocked I am to hear that.
Wow. Missy, how dare you talk to patients like that. Patients are your priority. There is no point for you to work if that is the way you are working. If it is not your work, then what is ? Those reports and care plans you’re doing doesn’t have any meaning if you are not able to perform @ help such small things to patients. Nursing is Caring, remember ? Didn’t you learn communication, or psychology and stuff ? I suggest you go back to basic dear rude missy. Maybe semester 1 of diploma ?

Have manners and maybe be down to earth a bit ? Imagine you are the one who lies flat on that bed, and you can’t even move, and a nurse came to you and treat you like some kind of rubbish, how will you feel ? Try putting yourself in patient’s shoes. Work like you want to work, if not, then don’t work at all.

Even when you’re having a crazy day, don’t let the patients be the victim of your messed up emotions. Remember, they’re going through a tougher state then you are.  If they’re not, they won’t be lying there on that bed, would they ?
